A basic introduction to Search Engine Optimization or SEO

Ever wondered how people actually find your website online? Well it’s thanks to the various search engines that are out there, the most famous of which is Google. But why do they come to your site or why do they choose other site’s over yours? Well just search for something, anything, on Google or any other search engine and you will get some pages of results, you will notice that if you perform the same search again, the order of the results in said pages will not change. This simply means that the results aren’t random.

Indeed, in order for a search engine to remain popular it needs to provide the most relevant and overall the best results for each search, the higher a result is in the result page, the more relevant it is and therefore the larger the chances that it will get clicked on and visited by the person who performed the search. So, if you want your website to get more visitors and become more notices, you will need to increase its result page ranking for searches relevant to your site. But how can you achieve that? Well, that’s where SEO steps in!

What is SEO?

Before we answer that question, we first need to talk about search engines a bit more. Like we said earlier, the ranking of the websites in a search result page is not random. It is determined by a very sophisticated algorithm. This algorithm essentially looks for certain qualities in every webpage and assigns it a ranking based on how many of its criteria it meets and how well it does so. It goes without saying that those algorithms are some of the most closely guarded secrets in the tech industry. Google’s algorithm is what made it so successful. This means that no one actually knows ALL the criteria used by search engines to produce their rankings, some people however by studying results have been able to discover some of the most important ones. That’s where SEO comes in.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it is essentially a process that will make a website more “attractive” to search engines by ensuring that it fulfills as many of their known criteria as possible. In other words, SEO improves a page’s ranking and by doing so it also increases the number of visitors and potential clients or customers it gets, since a higher ranking means more clicks.

How does SEO work?

Well, like we said earlier, it’s all about making a site more likeable as far as search engines are concerned. Such problems may include broken links within the site, links that lead to defunct pages and sites, long loading times, an overall design that is not mobile device friendly and even out of date content. As soon as the problems are identified, they will be resolved.

The SEO expert’s job doesn’t end there though. The above process is known as on-site optimization but there is another process that’s just as if not more important: off-site optimization. During this process the expert will try to get links to and from your site from so-called authority sites. If a site that is highly ranked by search engines has a link to your site or allows you to post links to it, then this shows to the search engines that your site is a source with authority. It goes without saying that this part is a lot more complicated than the first.

How long will it take?

Well obviously, the results of an SEO campaign are not immediately visible since it takes some time for Search engines to re-rank websites. The good news however is that once the campaign is over, the results will stick around for a long time,  since it’s very difficult for a well-ranked page to dip in the rankings, provided that it is maintained to some degree, of course.
