Reliant Energy Inc. started its operations in 1999 and before that was known as Houston Lighting & Power Company and was reorganized again when Texas deregulated its energy market leading to three main companies. The first was Centerpoint which handles distribution. The second was Texas Genco which is an electricity generator. Finally, there was Reliant Energy, which acted as the energy retailer for the other two companies.

Now, the company is owned by NRG, a company based in New Jersey, and is one of the largest electricity providers in the state of Texas with more than 1.5 million consumers subscribing to their services.  It is truly an industry leader and has won awards for its commitment to excellence, including the 2019 Smart Energy Innovation Award.

The rates offered by Reliant Energy depend heavily on what plan you were to opt for and could either be fixed or variable. If you are on a fixed-rate plan or contract, then the contract will keep your rate constant throughout the tenure of the contract. Upon expiry, you could opt to go for another fixed-rate plan or switch over to variable rates.

Variable rates will be in line with prevalent market rates and will change if there is any change in the market rate. However, Reliant Energy notifies its customers at least 14 days before any changes are to be implemented to the rate.

To give you an estimate, for fixed-rate plans the charges run from 8.5 cents to 9.5 cents per kWh. There is also a base charge ranging from $5 to $6 per month. There are some plans without any base charge but for these plans the energy rates are slightly higher.

Not only does Reliant provide excellent services to its customers, but it also plays its part for the community. They are involved in various charitable initiatives across the country and have provided scholarship to deserving students and donating and organizing efforts for relief for natural disasters. In 2016, the company also started the Reliant Gives Vote Program which supports charitable causes that employees feel are truly a benefit to the community.

This sense of community is not just a company policy and is prevalent in the Reliant Energy workforce on an individual level. In 2018 employees donated a combined $3 million and volunteered more than 8000 hours for various causes. In 2019, the company also started giving donations to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Bo’s Place, and Lunches of Love.

Reliant Energy’s generous nature also extends to its customer base. There have been countless examples of the company extending payment deadlines because customers are in some financial trouble. The company has also formalized such initiatives in the form of the Community Assistance from Reliant Energy (CARE) program, which offers assistance to qualified customers who are facing financial difficulties. The generous nature of Reliant Energy spilled over to customers, who partly fund this program via donations through their monthly bills.
